Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles as an Alternative Protein Source in Fish Feeds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a co-product of the dry-mill ethanol industry, are the dried residue that remains after the fermentation of corn (or other grains) mash by selected yeasts and enzymes to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide. The nutrient composition of DDGS varies depending on the source of grain and the methods used for ethanol and DDGS production. Generally, corn DDGS contains approximately 29% crude protein, 10% fat, 9% crude fiber and 5% ash. Based on the essential amino acid (EAA) composition, distillers grain products (DGP) from various grain sources are deficient in a few EAA for most fish species, notably in lysine and methionine but does not contain antinutritional factors found in most other plant protein sources. At present, DGP are mainly used in terrestrial animal feeds, and its use in fish feeds is limited. Optimum inclusion levels of DDGS in fish diets appeared to vary depending on the type of ingredient substituted and levels of other protein source, especially fish meal, present in the diets. However, results of previous research have shown that corn DDGS is a promising ingredient for aquaculture diets. A level of 20 to 40% DDGS has been successfully used in channel catfish and tilapia diets. In trout diets, a level of 15% has been suggested. However, inclusion levels of dietary DDGS can be increased by supplementation of limiting EAA such as lysine.

Utilization of DDGS by Cattle
Distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), the major byproduct of ethanol production, is a good protein and energy feed for cattle. The DDGS can be fed wet or dried with animal performance usually similar when fed as wet or dried products; however, some research results favored the wet products. Cattle diets can contain DDGS as replacements for portions of both concentrates and forages, although D...

متن کاملApparent ileal amino acid digestibility of reduced-oil distillers dried grains with solubles fed to broilers from 23 to 31 days of age.
An experiment was conducted using male Ross×Ross 708 broiler chicks to determine the effect of oil extraction from corn distillers dried grains with solubles on apparent ileal amino acid digestibility from 23 to 31 d of age. On an as-fed basis, ether extract concentrations were determined as 5.4% (L-distillers dried grains with solubles), 7.9% (M-distillers dried grains with solubles), and 10.5...

متن کاملUse of Minnesota-south Dakota Regional Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles in Swine Diets
The ethanol industry has experienced tremendous growth during the past decade. Ethanol production occurs as a result of fermentation of the soluble carbohydrate fraction of grain (starch). As a result, significant quantities of distillers dried grains (with or without solubles) is produced as a by-product of the ethanol industry. It is expected that the quantity of distillers dried grains with ...
